Sam Carter-Shamai
What do we really mean when we talk about complete communities? Starting at Dundas west, Toronto's most slept-on transit hub, Sam Carter-Shamai will lead an exploration of the co-location of industrial, commercial, cultural, residential and community resources to think about the limits of conventional "mixed-use" development.
This walk will celebrate the interstitial spaces and connective tissues that surround infrastructure corridors in the city. Our walk will meander in and around the seams in the urban landscape, checking out unexpected urban adjacencies and how the legacy/layers of industrial production contribute to making some of the most interesting neighbourhoods (and how prevailing planning rules regulate these spaces out of existence).
Themes to be explored include:
- Transit Oriented Development
- Employment and Industrial Areas
- Cultural Infrastructure
- Community Maintenance
- Memory
