Art and Parks Hidden Between Buildings
Ran Chen, James Parakh, City Planning, City of Toronto
Behind the glass and steel of Toronto’s newest developments lies a network of parks and art installations waiting to be discovered. While the City consistently negotiates for these spaces to improve Toronto residents' quality of life, sometimes they may be perceived as private spaces, hence "hidden" in plain sight.
Since 2000, over one million square feet of open space has been added to downtown Toronto -- much of it tucked between high-rises. These are POPS: Privately Owned Publicly-Accessible Open Spaces. Combined with the City’s "Percent for Public Art" program, these spots offer vital places for relaxation and inspiration.
On this walk, we will focus in the area around Yorkville, and we’ll visit diverse POPS and public art pieces that have transformed the area. Join us for a stroll to uncover these "secret" spaces, admire the art that animates them, and discuss how we can increase awareness of these essential city amenities.
