How to Save a Corner Store: Citizen Journalism, Street Photography, and Neighbourhood Retail Victory Lap

Dan Seljak, Another Glass Box

A few years ago, Finch Store--a local grocer--installed an espresso machine. Unknowingly, this was against zoning regulations, so when someone complained anonymously, the City moved to shut them down.

The plight of this store led to a (successful!) community campaign to see corner stores restored and enshrined in law. The intent of this walk is part celebration, part retelling, and part tutorial--how did we enact successful change here and what lessons can be applied to other issues in the city? We'll visit a few nearby neighbourhood retailers, discuss the changes that were allowed, and share some lessons learned.
