Infrastructure of the Don Valley-Past, Present and Future

Andrew Simpson

Attendees may be surprised at the extent of infrastructure, both working and remnant, that can be found in the valley. Toronto's ravines are full of infrastructure that makes the city function-- and more projects are being added all the time. We will visit two active construction sites in the Don Valley - the Ontario Line bridge crossing the Don Valley and Toronto Water river bank reinforcement project and discuss the impact these projects are having on the natural environment. We will continue to explore nearby Crothers Woods and CottonWood Flats-areas that have seen past industrial uses. As we walk we will encounter many examples of urban infrastructure. The walk leaders will discuss their volunteer efforts with Toronto Nature Stewards to help repair damage to these natural areas by removing invasive species and planting native plants to improve ecological health. Parts of the walk will be on unpaved trails that are steep in parts, sturdy boots and hiking poles are recommended.
