Politics of Transit - The Past Informing the Future

Doug Vidal-Hernández

Toronto has a rich history of public transit, streetcars, subways and rail that's been built through the political decisions made at City Hall, Queen's Park and Ottawa. Although it may not always feel like it, Toronto has one of the most developed public transit systems in North America and one of the highest riderships on the continent. This October, we'll have municipal elections across the city. The future of public transit is built on the political promises of previous governments.

We'll walk 2km through Parkdale, Queen West and Liberty Village. We'll explore decommissioned streetcar lines on Sudbury Street and in Liberty Market, we'll discuss topics like the proposed Queen St Subway, explore the future of Queen West and Liberty Village with the addition of the Ontario Line and the proposed King-Liberty GO station. Along the way, we'll examine how the 501 Queen and 504 King streetcars shape Toronto today.
