Toronto in the World: A Brief History of the City through Global Change
Tony Kogan, The Architecture Loby
Join the Architecture Lobby for a stroll in and around the Fort York/Liberty Village neighbourhood to travel through Toronto’s economic and material history. What role has Toronto played on the world stage? What forces shaped the built-form of the city we live and work in, from globe-spanning militaries to meat-packing workers?
Time allowing, we aim to stop at or discuss: Garrison Common Park, the Railroad, The Gardiner, The Toronto Abattoir, The Bentway. We will discuss Toronto in 4 historical and material eras. 1)Time Immemorial to Early 1800s. Toronto/Fort York and the British/U.S. competition, and industry. 2) Early 1800s to Mid 1900s. Industrialization, Toronto and Canadian expansion, and steel. 3) Mid 1900s to Late 1900s. Suburbanization, Globalization, and concrete/asphalt. 4) Late 1900s to Present. Financialization, Toronto as a ""Global City"", and glass.
How did these eras make the city, and how do they affect us in the present day?"
