Unmentionables: Beneath the Skirts of 19th Century Toronto

Mackenzie House Museum staff

Explore the hidden layers of Victorian Toronto on a walk that reveals the role of corsets, hoop skirts, and undergarments in 19th century daily life. Led by Mackenzie House Museum staff, this tour takes participants from Mackenzie House into the surrounding streets to examine how fashion, gender expectations, and social norms shaped women’s bodies and the city itself. Visitors will learn how these “unmentionable” garments were produced, worn, and experienced, and how Toronto’s streetscapes supported both undergarment consumption and manufacture. This engaging and informative walk offers a new way to see familiar places while uncovering the unseen histories woven into the city’s past.
