The Queensway: Avenue of Innovation and Transformation
Allison Reid, Wenting Li and Vanathy Ganesharajah - Urban Design, City of Toronto
Join City of Toronto urban designers for this guided walk and talk along one of Toronto’s important western Avenues: The Queensway.
As an Avenue of innovation, The Queensway was one of the first Avenues studied and planned for mid-rise intensification in the amalgamated City of Toronto. The Avenue is also home to the Sustainable Sidewalk Pilot Project, which advanced new urban street tree planting standards and stormwater management best practices now used across the city.
As an Avenue of transformation, the rich soils of the ancient Lake Iroquois lie beneath a colonial history of market gardens, gambling houses, industrial uses, main street and commercial plazas, post-war housing, and present-day urban intensification being shaped dramatically by new mid-rise and tall buildings, parks, streetscapes, and community spaces.
This walk is hosted by the City of Toronto Planning Division and our walk hosts will be joined by Chief Planner Jason Thorne.
