Toronto Public Transit - Past, Present and Future
Doug Vidal-Hernandez
Toronto has a rich history of public transit, streetcars, subways and rail that we'll explore by walking 2km through Parkdale, Queen West and Liberty Village. Toronto has one of the most developed public transit systems in North America and one of the highest riderships on the continent. While it may not feel like something to be proud of if you've ever been stuck on a shuttle bus or trapped underground because Line 1 had to be temporarily shut down, the future of public transit in Toronto has a lot of promise. A lot of that promise is built on the history of public transit in the city.
We'll walk through the streets of a decommissioned streetcar line on Sudbury Street, discuss topics like the proposed Queen St Subway, explore the future of Queen West and Liberty Village with the addition of the King-Liberty GO station and the new Ontario Line which will end at Exhibition GO. Along the way, we'll discuss how the current Queen St and King St streetcars shape Toronto today.
