Walking & Talking Dogs: Navigating life in the city with a canine companion
Ruth
Hoping to explore topics surrounding dog ownership (privilege and posing questions like “who deserves to own a dog”) dog culture in Toronto (off-leash dogs & advocating for dogs and people in multi-use public spaces), and access to nature in the city are among many of the intersecting topics I’m sure we’ll touch upon!
Stops/Local landmarks:
START: Kensington Market
Meeting point: Local community hub/cafe Milky’s, 760 Dundas St. W
Milky’s is a cafe that’s been in the neighbourhood for almost 6 years. They draw a dedicated community of regulars to the shop 7 days a week to sip, chat and practice the art of doing nothing together. I’ve met many of my closest friends at this local spot and it’s been an incubator of some amazing conversations with folks in my community.
- TPL Sanderson Branch, Scadding Court Community Centre, 707 Dundas Market (rest stop/washroom)
A community hub with food stalls in shipping containers serving a variety of cuisines showcasing the city’s diversity and love of good quality, affordable food! The Sanderson Branch and Scadding Court Centre are pillars in the neighbourhood for providing enriching programming that connects people.
- Bellevue Park/Bellevue Avenue
Discussing topics about off-leash dogs in urban areas/public shared spaces, what dogs deserve to be off-leash, who deserves to have a dog
- St Stephen’s Community House/St Stephen’s in the Field Church
- Statue outside church, “whatsoever you do” by Timothy Schmalz
