Yonge and Eglinton is for People
Colleen Bailey
Join More Neighbours Toronto to explore how municipal and provincial processes shape the way that our neighbourhoods change (or don't). If you've heard about zoning and housing but found it overwhelming, Yonge and Eglinton is the perfect place to learn what it all means. Walking only a few short blocks, we will journey through three different land use designations and too many municipal zones to count, 3 provincial ridings, and past a variety of building types and tenures. If you attended last year's walk, the topics, locations and LRT jokes will be similar, but with a few recent updates.
Collectively, the area has the variety that Jane Jacobs often admired, but zoning still attempts to prescribe what (and who) belongs where inside of it. What
might she make of Toronto's policies that put new growth into a few existing Apartment Neighbourhoods and along main streets? How does Toronto's approach, including the kind of local consultation that Jacobs championed, work with the City's overall goals on equity, housing and the environment? What examples of sidewalk ballets can be found amongst the condos?
