Local food, activism and community at Karma Coop

Bob Biderman, Andrea Dawber & Paul Decampo

This easy walking tour will retrace Jane Jacob’s Saturday morning walk to Karma Coop, discuss her connection to Karma Co-op, which she famously said is “what we need… in every neighbourhood in North America”. The tour will recount some of the 70’s activism in Toronto that created the co-op, the activism that continues today, and how Karma’s ongoing community activities continue to build on Jane's vision of community-driven, dynamic, organic and evolving neighbourhoods that bring the large scale of the city around us down to the human-scale.

On the way to Karma, we will visit a rose garden dedicated to Jane and laneway murals, developed in 2024 and 2025. The food-themed murals were a collaboration with the City of Toronto and Karma. Upon arriving at the food coop, attendees will hear about our local food ecosystems, food security, the pressures our food system faces, and how Karma’s choices as well as our own can have a rippling effect to bring positive change.
