Quiet in the City - A self guided walk of Prospect Cemetery
Andrea Oppedisano
Where do you go to find quiet in the City?
A topic that I’ve been fascinated with for some time, this walk explores the role cemeteries play as quiet privately owned public spaces.
Acknowledging their primary purpose as sacred places for burials and memorialization, we will discuss the various other functions they serve. For example, cemeteries are important green spaces, offering residents low impact recreational opportunities. They are also quiet places that offer residents a place to grieve, contemplate, mediate or simply be with our thoughts.
Participants will be encouraged to share their own stories of the Cemetery, the adjacent neighbourhoods or where they go to find quiet in the City.
Following a brief history of the cemetery, participants will be provided with a map and some other literature and encouraged to take a quiet self-guided walk through the cemetery.
