Waiting for the light

Malcolm Kennedy

Waiting for the light to change feels like a fact of life — but cities actually have a lot of choices as to where they put traffic signals, and how they’re timed.

In this walk we’ll look at how traffic signals are timed at various intersections around the city, and how this differs from similar intersections in other cities. We’ll think about the tradeoffs between speed and flexibility, the way Toronto’s traffic signals prioritize certain kinds of movement, as well as some win-win changes we could make that would benefit everyone. We’ll also visit some intersections where experiments are underway to prioritize transit over personal vehicle movement.
