Walking the Future: Exploring Sites of Change by Foot

Julia Segal

Location: Yorkville/Church-Wellesley/Upper Jarvis/Rosedale

In much of Toronto, it’s impossible to walk a block without coming across a sign that says “Notice: A Change is Proposed For This Site.” This walk uses these signs as inspiration to investigate what type of development is proposed, why, and what impacts it may have. These sites of change will be jumping off points to discuss development, intensification, rental and condo housing, urban design, parking, transit, human-scale architecture, sustainability and more.

This walk will weave in and out of distinct neighbourhoods, allowing us to consider both large-scale change (70-storey high rises) and small-scale projects (missing middle low-rises in Rosedale’s single-family zone).

Your guide is a PhD student in Architecture, Design and Building Science. Her research interests are human-scale, universal design and flexibility/adaptability in our built environment. But she isn’t leading this tour as an expert -- just a local who walks these streets often, and is curious to learn more about planning and urban design. Experts in these fields are welcome... and so are curious enthusiasts!
