Multiplexes and More - Exploring land use changes coming to an established neighbourhood

Geoff Kettel

Walk Summary
The City of Toronto has introduced two key planning initiatives affecting neighbourhoods: the Expanding Housing Opportunities in Neighbourhoods (EHON) to permit Multiplexes (sixplexes in Toronto and East York, fourplexes in North York, Scarborough, and Etobicoke-York); and the Major Transit Station Areas program which mandates increased numbers of “residences and jobs” based on 200 metre and 500 metre circles around Subways, Light Rail Transit (LRT) and GO-Transit stations.

Leaside has a distinct physical/architectural, social and economic character, which was planned with adjacent residential and business districts, and incorporated as a town in 1913. How will these planning initiatives affect Leaside’s character? Jane’s Walk will examine the current status and potential future impact of these changes in Leaside via a walk from the Leaside Station (Bayview Avenue) to the Laird Station along Eglinton, and adjacent streets.

The perspective taken by the Walk is that there is a lot of change happening, and much more to come in the neighbourhoods of the City, especially those adjacent to and benefiting from new rapid transit lines. Yet the community, and the public are generally unaware, and are unprepared for the changes.

This is an opportunity to walk, listen, talk, ask questions and discuss the changes and to encourage community to engage with the change.
