Shaping Space: Public Art and the Woodbine Casino Expansion Project

Andrea Mantin, Allison Reid, Lisa Hosale and Ben Mills

Join us for an engaging walking tour that explores how public art is transforming the landscape of the Woodbine Casino Expansion Project in Etobicoke!

The walk will be led by City of Toronto staff from Urban Design and Community Planning, as well as the project’s Public Art Consultant. The tour will explore six exciting new public art installations, provide an overview of the City’s Percent for Public Art program while also highlighting the key urban design and planning considerations behind the site's development.

During the walk, we will engage in a discussion about the role of public art in place-making, enhancing the public realm, and fostering a sense of identity and belonging.

As we tour the public art on site, we will examine the artist selection process and discuss how fair and equitable practices ensure meaningful opportunities for a broad range of artists- including artists from Indigenous, Black, and equity-deserving communities.

We will also learn about the artists who created the artwork, some of the ideas and themes explored in the installations, and the different materials and methods of fabrication.

This walk is for anyone interested in public art, placemaking, urban design, or just looking to discover new corners of the city!
